Calluses and Warts

Callus, Corns (Uonome), Verruca / Plantar Warts (Caused by Virus)

All of these conditions involve abnormal thickening of the skin, but the causes and treatments are different.
Calluses (Tako) occur when pressure is applied broadly over a certain area of the foot—similar to how blisters form on the hands from sports or manual work.
In contrast, corns (Uonome) are caused by concentrated pressure on a small point combined with rotational shear force during walking. This results in a hard core that penetrates inward and presses on the nerves, causing pain.

Gait correction, reviewing your footwear, or using insoles may help improve symptoms. However, if calluses or corns are caused by structural deformities in the feet, treatment of the underlying deformity may be necessary.

Verruca (plantar warts) are caused by viral infection. They are often contracted in communal spaces such as public baths, gyms, or swimming pools where people walk barefoot. Warts themselves are usually painless, but since the virus grows by pulling in blood vessels, they tend to bleed easily if shaved.

Because they are infectious, the virus can spread between family members.

Standard treatments include cryotherapy (freezing with liquid nitrogen) or herbal medicines. Cryotherapy can be painful for some patients, and deep or widespread lesions may require multiple treatments. In difficult cases, surgical removal may be considered at Foot Clinic Omotesando.

Once diagnosed with warts, please avoid sharing towels, mats, or other items until fully healed.
